FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the training of an ND?
Prior to admission to a naturopathic medical school, an applicant must have a bachelor’s degree and have completed standard premedical courses. The length of study for a naturopathic physician (ND) is 4-5 years of graduate level courses including the same medical sciences and clinical diagnostic studies as an MD. Additionally, Naturopathic physicians study natural approaches to healing with an emphasis on disease prevention. Coursework includes extensive training in clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, environmental medicine, physical medicine and counseling. Naturopathic physicians receive 2-3 years of clinical experience in addition to medical coursework. As experts in the field of natural medicine, Naturopathic physicians are the only primary care practitioners trained in a wide use of natural therapies.
The accrediting agency for naturopathic medical schools in the US is the Council on Naturopathic Medical School Education (CNME). The CNME is the only accrediting body recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit naturopathic medical schools.
Upon completion of their medical education, Naturopathic physicians take 5 days of rigorous post doctoral board exams in order to receive their licenses.
What is the scope of practice of an ND?
Naturopathic physicians are currently licensed as primary care doctors in 13 states in the US. Each state has its own laws regulating scope of practice and prescriptive rights of naturopathic physicians. In a licensed state, an ND can diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions. ND’s perform physical exams, order lab work and diagnostic imaging, refer to specialists, and prescribe a range of prescriptive medications. In licensed states, ND?s are commonly covered under health insurance policies.
What is the difference between a Naturopath and a Naturopathic Physician?
In states that do not yet offer licensing, some informally trained naturopaths use the title ND. These practitioners are not ?licensable? as naturopathic physicians since they have not received training from accredited schools. These individuals have often taken correspondence courses, seminars, or attended schools that educate about natural therapeutics but not about clinical diagnosis. Such degrees are not recognized by the CNME.
Since Washington DC does not license ND?s, there are no educational standards and one must inquire about the training of their healthcare provider. Dr. Rodriguez maintains an active license in Washington State.
What is the difference between naturopathy and homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed in Germany in the 1700?s by Samuel Hahnemann. It is based on the principle of the similimum, or the idea that ?like cures like?, using minute amounts of natural substances that stimulate the body?s innate healing abilities. Naturopathic doctors are trained in homeopathy as part of their education. Homeopathy fits the philosophy of Naturopathic medicine and is often utilized by naturopathic doctors in their treatments.
What types of conditions does an ND treat?
Naturopathic physicians treat a variety of acute and chronic conditions ranging from physical to emotional issues. Naturopathic medicine is especially useful for both treating and preventing long term chronic ailments. Naturopathic medicine is complementary to conventional medicine; you can consult with a naturopathic physician for most ailments you would your primary care provider.
