I’m working in the DMV this week after an epic spiritual journey—after 37 hours of travel and 5 airports later, I returned just over a week ago. A couple thousand of us traveled to Kathmandu from all over the globe to attend ‘100 Years of Wisdom’ – a week of ceremonies to honor the life and celebrate the 100th birthday of His Eminence Yongdzin Rinpoche.

Yongdzin Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche is the spiritual elder of the Bön lineage, and is considered a living Buddha. He escaped Tibet in 1959 and is the reason the national spiritual tradition of Tibet is thriving today.

There was such a strong energy of purification in the ceremonies we attended at Triten Norbutse monastery. Combined with extreme cold and toxic pollution, I woke up sick the first day of the event. Four days later, my room was warm again (thanks to a newly installed split), and it took 24 hours for the cold to leave my bones. This was such an interesting metaphor for my own healing—a big part of which involves melting grief from losing my beloved Grandfather that has been frozen.

When I first encountered this spiritual path, I really wasn’t looking for a new religion, but several undeniably powerful experiences made it clear this would be an important part of my life. The deeper I go, the more energy that’s been hidden in the subconscious comes to the surface requiring processing or integration.

I’m back on the other side and in the process of equilibrating, releasing more of the old, and re-centering myself. While I feel the pull to go inward and retreat, I also recognize the need to be present for others.

Many people in my practice and social circles are feeling ungrounded right now with the rapid changes in government, and an overwhelming sense of uncertainty, which is taking a toll on the body, mind, and spirit.

I’ve been sharing some tips on social media here and here about how coming back to yourself and navigating the uncertainty that’s so prevalent right now. If you’ve been feeling off, here are some energetic frameworks to consider.

Building Your Vertical Axis of Power
In Native American shamanism, there is a lesson about ‘walking the Red Road’ – aligned with the directions of north and south (aligned with Spirit and the Earth) – versus East and West – being pulled by thoughts and emotions. The idea is to become a vertical pillar of energy, rooted deeply in the Earth and open to the wisdom of the sky. By solidifying your vertical axis, you are less swayed by external forces, and able to withstand the deep draining currents. You can cultivate this connection through visualization and breath work – clearing what is in the way of connecting to the above and below. This type of grounding takes practice and patience but is well worth it as it will help you stay centered in your truth.

Focus on Your Circle of Connections
In these times, it’s vital to put your energy into what matters most—your personal ecosystem. Your family, friends, community, and even the places you visit regularly are your circle of influence. Nourish and prioritize these connections, because they are the ones that will support you in moments of uncertainty. Constantly keeping up with what is going on is an externality very far away from your personal circle, and over time it erodes your personal will. When we’re deeply rooted in our relationships and communities, we’re influence what’s closest to us, and this creates a ripple effect.

Reclaim Your Energy
Every time your energy gets pulled outside of yourself—into the news, the drama of the world, what tragedy could happen next—bring your energy back to you. Redirect your focus inward. Invest in your health, your passions, your creativity, your growth. The world needs people who are anchored in themselves, and this is how we become the change we wish to see.
